"Galectin (Gal)-3 is a central regulator of fibrosis in the lung with expression upregulated in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid and serum of IPF patients, and further elevation observed during exacerbations. The profibrotic function of Gal-3 is multifactorial due to its ability to cross-link and promote signalling via multiple cell surface receptors including integrins and growth factor receptors, such as transforming growth factor-beta, vascular endothelial growth factor and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptors. Constitutive global deficiency of Gal-3 leads to attenuated fibrosis in murine models."
